Die heutige Zentralbibliothek wird ab Frühjahr 2024 zurückgebaut. Dazu wird das Gebäude stückweise abgetragen und das Material zum Recycling sortiert. Der Prozess gleicht mehr einem „Abnagen“ als einem Abriss. Für die Bauarbeiten muss die Bushaltestelle stadteinwärts unter der Mensabrücke verlegt werden. S-Bahn, H-Bahn und die umliegenden Gebäude werden weiter uneingeschränkt erreichbar sein, um die künftige Baustelle herum werden alternative Fuß- und Radwege und eine Fußgängerbrücke angelegt. Nur Parkplätze, die direkt in Baustellennähe liegen, fallen weg. Einschränkungen durch Lärm und Staubbelastung sollen so weit wie möglich vermieden werden.

The old building will be deconstructed starting in spring 2024. To do this, the building will be removed piece by piece and the material sorted for recycling. The process is more like “gnawing” than demolition. The S-Bahn, H-Bahn and surrounding buildings will be accessible without restriction. One of the bus stops under the Mensa Bridge will have to be relocated for the construction work; the footpath from the S-Bahn to the campus will also have to be rerouted. Around the future construction site, alternative pedestrian and bicycle paths and a pedestrian bridge will be built. Only parking spaces near the construction site will be eliminated.
